No. 16 Kentucky dropped to seventh-ranked Vanderbilt 84-83 Thursday night at Historic Memorial Coliseum.
“Obviously very disappointed with the outcome," said UK coach Kenny Brooks. "If you want to win a basketball game, that nature of playing against one of the best teams in the country, you have to minimize your mistakes and about us, we lost focus several possessions, had careless turnovers, careless miscommunications that could have been rectified if we had just communicated, but give I them credit. You got Mikayla Blakes who obviously is one of the best players, if not the best player in the country, and she put them on her back and she made some really big shots down the stretch to propel them to the win.
"But disappointed, I feel like it’s been a little frustrating period for us just because we felt like we were going in a direction and obviously Teonni (Key) got hurt and trying to put it back together, and trying to find ways to get that chemistry, but we’ll continue to fight.”
The loss dropped UK to 18-6 overall and 5-5 in SEC.
Key gunned in a career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Kentucky. UK's Amelia Hassett hit five three-point baskets on her way to 19 points, while Clara Strack had another double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Strack added seven assists and one blocked shot. Asia Boone scored 12 points before fouling out.
Mikayla Blakes hit 37 points for Vanderbilt.
Turnovers were the difference in the game. The Wildcats made 20 turnovers, leading to 25 Vanderbilt points. Conversely, the Commodores turned it over just six times, and Kentucky got just five points off of those miscues.
UK plays at No. 4 Texas on Monday. The 7:30 p.m. ET game will be shown on the SEC Network.
