LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky junior offensive tackle has been named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. This is Young’s first player of the week honor.

Young, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, graded at 91 percent in Kentucky’s 38-17 win over Eastern Michigan. He led the team with seven knockdown blocks and 24 blocks at the point of attack, did not allow any quarterback sacks or pressures and did not have any missed assignments or penalties. He had a knockdown block on UK’s first rushing touchdown and point-of-attack blocks on UK’s other two rushing TDs.

As a team, UK had 461 yards of total offense, including 200 each in rushing and passing. The Wildcats have scored 38 points in each of its first two games, first time that has happened since 2007. The Cats rushed for 239 yards and had two scoring drives of at least 90 yards, giving them four such drives in two games. Running backs A.J. Rose and Kavosiey Smoke each have a rushing touchdown in each of the first two games this season, the first UK teammates to do that since Tony Dixon and Alfonso Smith in 2009.

Young missed the 2018 season with a left knee injury suffered during fall camp.

Kentucky is 2-0 heading into this weekend’s highly-anticipated matchup with the Florida Gators in Kroger Field. The sold-out game will air at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, the only conference game in the prime time window.

Hornung Award Recognizes Lynn Bowden Jr.

Kentucky junior athlete Lynn Bowden Jr. has been selected to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for his impressive play vs. Eastern Michigan.

Bowden, from Youngstown, Ohio, caught seven passes for 54 yards and one touchdown in UK’s 38-17 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. He became the first UK player with at least six receptions in each of the first two games since Randall Cobb in 2009. He now has 1,086 career receiving yards which ranks 27th on the UK career receiving yardage list.

He also threw a 32-yard completion to Terry Wilson that set up Kavosiey Smoke’s first-quarter touchdown run. Bowden has completed 4-of-6 passes for 124 yards during his career.

The 2019 Hornung Award is annually awarded to the most versatile player in college football. The winner will be announced on March 4, 2020 at the award’s annual dinner, to be held at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky. Nicknamed The Golden Boy, Hornung was a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Notre Dame in 1956 and the NFL’s Most Valuable Player with the Green Bay Packers whose versatility earned him enshrinement in both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fames.
