RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team will join UNC Asheville, Texas A&M-Commerce and host Georgia State University in a three-game round robin event at the new GSU Convocation Center on Nov. 18-20.
The Colonels will play Georgia State on Friday, Nov. 18. UNC Asheville and EKU will face off on Nov. 19. Eastern Kentucky will conclude play on Nov. 20 against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Georgia State went 18-11 last year, won the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNC Asheville finished 17-15 this past season and played in the College Basketball Invitational. Texas A&M-Commerce is coming off a 17-9 season. The Lions will be playing their first season at the NCAA Division I level after making four D-II tournament appearances in the last six years.
EKU's record last season was 13-18. However, in four seasons at the helm, A.W. Hamilton’s Colonels have broken 29 program records. During the 2021-22 season EKU broke program records for 3-pointers made and attempted in a game, and 3-pointers made and attempted in a season.
For the second straight season, Eastern Kentucky led its conference in scoring, averaging 79 points per game in 2021-22. The Colonels were the 16th highest scoring team in the nation. EKU also ranked second in the country in turnover margin, third in 3-pointers per game, fourth in steals per game and seventh in turnovers forced.
The 2022 EKU recruiting class was ranked as high as 65th in the country by 247Sports and includes the program’s first-ever ESPN four-star freshman recruit, a former four-star high school prospect, a three-star point guard, a junior college All-American, Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball and the 35th ranked JUCO player in the nation.
