BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Following his buzzer beater in the win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Dec. 8, Eastern Kentucky University senior forward Nick Mayo (pictured) has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for men’s basketball.
Mayo averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks-per-game in two wins last week; however, it was his game-winner against NKU on Saturday night that drew all the headlines. With the game tied, 74-74, in the waning seconds, Mayo drove baseline and hit a fadeaway jumper over Drew McDonald at the horn to give the Colonels a huge win over their in-state rivals.
Mayo finished the game with 27 points and 11 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the season. He added four blocks.
It was Mayo’s second buzzer beater in a span of seven days. On Saturday, December 1, he hit a step-back three-pointer as time expired to give EKU a 70-69 victory at High Point.
In Wednesday’s win over USC Upstate, Mayo led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and four more blocks.
Mayo now leads the OVC in scoring at 24.4 points-per-game and ranks second in rebounding at 9.2 rebounds-per-game. He also ranks in the top five in the league in free throw percentage (third / 89.5%) and blocks-per-game (third / 2.0).
It is the second time this season, and the sixth time in his career, Mayo has been named OVC Player of the Week.
Mayo and the Colonels will look for their fourth straight win when they visit Xavier on Saturday, December 15, in Cincinnati.
