UK Baseball's Troy Squires Named Finalist for 2018 Senior CLASS Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky senior catcher/first baseman Troy Squires (pictured) was chosen as one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award for baseball, it was announced Tuesday, April 24. The award honors seniors who excel both on and off the field of play.

Squires, a 5-foot-11, 200-pounder from Elizabethtown, Ky., earlier this season was named National and Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for his performance in a career week that culminated in a series win over No. 3 Texas Tech. He also was a second-team All-SEC selection on 2017, his first as a full-time starter.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 10 finalists will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 College World Series® in June. Fans can vote on www.seniorclassaward.com.

Squires recently was inducted into Kentucky Athletics’ Frank G. Ham Society of Character, which honors Wildcats who have shown an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, career preparation and serving as a role model.

Squires is having a terrific senior season, hitting .301 with 40 RBI and 13 extra-base hits with nearly as many walks (19) as strikeouts (24) and 12 hit by pitch. He has 13 sacrifices this season, tying his own mark for fourth on the single-season list and 34 for his career, which is third on the school’s career list.
