Wildcat Junior Tristan Pompey Named SEC Player of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky junior outfielder Tristan Pompey (pictured) was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for his 10-RBI week in three wins over No. 21 Louisville and South Carolina, it was announced on Monday, April 9.

Hitting leadoff, Pompey matched a career high with five runs driven in against Louisville in an 8-5 win on Tuesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium. He added three more RBI in a series-opening 14-1 win over South Carolina on Friday and led off Sunday’s series-clinching game with a home run, the fourth time he’s done that in his career.

Pompey and senior catcher/first baseman Troy Squires were the engine pulling the Wildcats’ train last week, which was critical for the club’s SEC standing. Pompey hit .412 with three runs scored, a double, home run, 10 RBI and a steal in winning the award for the first time in his career.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder also was tremendous defensively and delivered the knockout punch to South Carolina on Friday with a three-run double that blew the game open and set the tone on Sunday with his leadoff blast over the high right field wall.

The Toronto, Ontario, native is hitting .358 this season with 18 runs, 11 doubles, five home runs, 28 RBI, 15 walks and four stolen bases. He’s reached base safely in 61of the past 64 games, is slugging .632 and has reached base at a .455 clip. The All-America outfielder also moved into the top 25 on UK’s all-time hits list last week with 165 career hits.
