HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Lincoln Memorial University men's basketball team has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season, which includes a rematch against the defending NCAA Division II national champions, 14 games at Tex Turner Arena and 20 South Atlantic Conference contests.

The Railsplitters, ranked No. 6 in the Street & Smith's preseason national rankings, enter the 2017-18 campaign looking to claim their third consecutive NCAA Division II Southeast Region championship while angling for a third straight trip to the national semifinals. Lincoln Memorial has won five consecutive SAC regular-season titles and piled up 30-plus wins in each of the last three seasons. Exhibition at Butler Before the regular season commences, the Railsplitters will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for an exhibition against the Butler Bulldogs on November 4 in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler went 25-9 last season and lost to the eventual national champions, North Carolina, in the Sweet 16. Butler made back-to-back appearances in the National Championship game in 2010 and 2011. Defending National Champions Highlight Nonconference Schedule The Railsplitters will play eight nonconference games, headlined by a rematch of last season's national semifinal showdown against the No.1 preseason nationally-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats on December 19 in Owensboro, Ky. Northwest Missouri State went 35-1 last season to capture the program's first-ever men's basketball title. The Bearcats ended the Railsplitters' season in the national semifinals with a 79-67 win at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. before beating Fairmont State to win the 2017 crown. Northwest Missouri State returns National Player of the Year Justin Pitts as the Bearcats will look to become the first back-to-back Division II national champions since the early 90s (Cal State Bakersfield). In addition to that signature nonconference matchup, the Railsplitters will open the season against Lees-McRae (Nov. 10) and King (Nov. 11) in the SAC vs. Conference Carolinas Challenge. King went 19-12 last season, while Lees-McRae will be looking to rebound from an 8-21 season. Lincoln Memorial will also play back-to-back home and away games against Gulf South Conference foe Shorter, taking on the Hawks in the Tex Turner Arena opener on November 18 before making a trip to Rome, Georgia just three days later. Shorter went 17-12 last season. Home games against Virginia-Wise (November 25), Bluefield College (December 6) and Hiwassee (February 14) round out the nonconference slate. 20 SAC Games On Tap In its search for a sixth straight SAC regular-season title, Lincoln Memorial will play all 10 league opponents twice - once at home and once on the road. The Railsplitters open SAC play on November 29 at Tusculum before returning to Tex Turner Arena to face Catawba (December 2), Mars Hill (December 11) and Wingate (December 13) for the next three league tilts. Wingate was the best of that quartet last season, finishing third in the league with a 16-6 SAC effort. Lincoln Memorial closes out 2017 with road trips to Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne sandwiched around that nonconference game against Northwest Missouri State. Newberry finished fifth in the SAC last season with an 18-11 overall record, while Lenoir-Rhyne went 10-17. The Railsplitters then host Anderson (January 3) and Coker (January 6) in the first two games of 2018 before hitting the road to face Queens (January 13), Carson-Newman (January 17) and Catawba (January 20). Queens should prove to be the most significant threat to end Lincoln Memorial's reign atop the SAC standings, as the Royals are ranked No. 2 in the Street & Smith's preseason rankings after finishing 30-4 last season. The Railsplitters ended the Royals' 2016-17 season in the Sweet 16, but Queens accounted for two of LMU's five losses last season, including a 75-72 setback in the SAC Championship title game. The Railsplitters and Royals meet for the second time on February 24 in the regular-season finale at Tex Turner Arena. Carson-Newman also had a solid 2016-17 season, posting a 19-11 overall record. The Eagles, who return preseason All-American Charles Clark, beat Lincoln Memorial in an overtime thriller last season in Jefferson City. After that three-game road trip, the Railsplitters play three of their next four in Harrogate, hosting Tusculum (January 24), Lenoir-Rhyne (January 27) and Newberry (February 3) around a trip to Mars Hill (January 31). Lincoln Memorial then plays three of its last five SAC games on the road, traveling to Anderson (February 7), Wingate (February 10) and Coker (February 17) before hosting Carson-Newman (February 21) and Queens in the last two games of the regular season. Home Sweet Home The Railsplitters will play 14 of their 28 regular-season games at Tex Turner Arena. Single-game tickets are available one hour prior to tip-off for $5. Basketball fans can also join the L Club for season tickets as well as exclusive membership benefits. For more information about the L Club and its benefits, click here. Complimentary tickets to nearly every home game are also available from the respective game sponsors. Postseason Play Begins on February 28 The South Atlantic Conference Championship, which will include the top eight teams in the final league standings, commences on the final day of February with quarterfinal-round action. The top-four seeds will host their respective first-round games, while the semifinals and finals will be played at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. The Railsplitters have made five straight appearances in the SAC Championship title game. The NCAA Division II Southeast Regional begins at a to-be-determined site on March 10, while the Southeast Regional representative in the Elite Eight will be decided on March 13. For the second straight year, the Elite Eight will be held at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. March 20-24. Lincoln Memorial is vying for its third straight Southeast Region title and trip to the national semifinals. Thoughts from Head Men's Basketball Coach Josh Schertz "Looking at our schedule it's incredibly challenging as always. Starting with a marquee exhibition against Butler in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, we will have to be performing at a high level right off the bat in order to have a chance to be competitive. "We open up the season with four of the first six games away from home and by the end of the first semester we will have played five conference games along with a neutral site game against defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Northwest Missouri State. This should bring a tremendous amount of focus and sense of urgency to the first few weeks of practice. "Of course the 20 SAC games we play is the crux of our schedule and looking across the league it seems to be on track once again for what it's evolved into, and that's as good a league as there is in the country at this level. We are excited about the opportunities ahead and the challenge of this group growing as the season goes on."
Lady Railsplitters Announce 2017-18 Schedule
The defending South Atlantic Conference regular-season champion Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season. The Lady Railsplitters will play 27 games, including 13 home contests and seven against NCAA Tournament opponents. The Lady Railsplitters are coming off of a banner 2016-17 campaign when they won a program-record 28 games, set the SAC record for longest winning streak (20), won the first SAC regular-season title in program history and also made the deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history. Lincoln Memorial advanced all the way to the title game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional, where the Lady Railsplitters were handed an 86-75 loss by No. 4 Columbus State to fall just shy of a trip to the Elite Eight. Brutal Nonconference Slate The Lady Railsplitters have a daunting nonconference schedule that includes three teams that played in the 2017 NCAA Tournament and five teams that won at least 20 games. All told, Lincoln Memorial's seven nonconference opponents combined for a 151-67 record last season. The Lady Railsplitters open the 2017-18 season against Lander (November 10) and USC Aiken (November 11) in the annual SAC vs. Peach Belt Challenge, which is being held this season in Aiken, S.C. Lander won the PBC East division crown last season while compiling a 25-8 overall record and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. USC Aiken, meanwhile, went 14-15, representing the only nonconference opponent for Lincoln Memorial that finished with a losing record last season. After that season-opening weekend, Lincoln Memorial travels to Virginia-Wise (November 15) before making its Tex Turner Arena debut against Clayton State on November 18. Virginia-Wise finished third in the Mountain East Conference with a 21-11 record last season, while Clayton State posted a 24-7 mark to place second in the brutal PBC West division. The Lady Railsplitters picked up their first NCAA Tournament victory with an opening-round 87-58 win over the Lakers last season. Lincoln Memorial then heads to King on November 21 to face the Tornado, who went 25-7, finished second in the Conference Carolinas standings and made an NCAA Tournament appearance last season. The Lady Railsplitters wrap up the nonconference slate with home games against Southern Indiana (December 19) and Tennessee Wesleyan (February 13). Southern Indiana produced a 24-5 record last season, while Tennessee Wesleyan - a NAIA member - went 18-14. 13 home Games on Tap The Lady Railsplitters will play 13 games within the friendly confines of Tex Turner Arena. Marquee matchups include NCAA Tournament foes Clayton State, Wingate (December 13) and Anderson (January 3) as well as nearby conference rivals Tusculum (January 24) and Carson-Newman (February 21). Thoughts from Head Coach Krystal Evans "This is a tough schedule. I do think that's going to help us. There are a few teams from the Peach Belt, which seems like a faster, more athletic conference than that SAC. But I do feel like the SAC is more post-oriented than the Peach Belt. It's good to have those glimpses into what is going on with each conference. We're having these challenges early on that will prepare us for conference play. "These are great teams that we are bringing facing. I'm trying to think more regional games, what's going to help us get over the hump. What's going to be things that are going to prepare us for postseason play? I'm trying to take things another notch up and hopefully prepare our team as best we can."
