BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research, a new weapon in the fight against prostate cancer, officially launches this month. The mission of The Mike Slive Foundation is simple: saving lives by funding cutting-edge prostate cancer research.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men (after skin cancer) and is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men. Typically occurring in older men, prostate cancer will be diagnosed in about 1 in 7 men in their lifetimes.
Ed Meyerson, founder of The Mike Slive Foundation, says he was inspired to form an organization to fund prostate cancer research after watching both his father and his friend, former SEC Commissioner Mike Slive (pictured), battle the disease.
“I reached out to Mike because I knew that together we could make a contribution to help end prostate cancer. Mike’s story is an inspiration to us all,” Meyerson said. “What our doctors do here in Alabama has a global impact on ending prostate cancer for good. More funding is crucial to make the important advancements and discoveries that will save even more lives, and The Foundation was created to ensure the needed funding is secured.”
Slive is dedicated to fighting prostate cancer – he has battled the disease several times and is a survivor.
“My life was saved by cutting-edge prostate cancer research. Now, I have the opportunity to give back and help save other lives through The Foundation,” Slive said. “No one should die from prostate cancer.”
The beginning of the end of prostate cancer starts with an event to bring awareness to The Mike Slive Foundation. Members of The Foundation and emcee Paul Finebaum will launch Allies in the Fight on Thursday, September 14th. Presenting sponsors include Regions Bank and Medical Properties Trust.
