Eastern Kentucky's JaVontae Hawkins Named National Mid-Major Player Of The Week


RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University junior wing JaVontae Hawkins (pictured) has been named the National Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, it was announced Monday, Nov. 23. Hawkins averaged 20.3 points-per-game, 4.3 rebounds-per-game and 3.0 assists-per-game in four contests last week. His play helped the Colonels improve to 4-1 on the year after they won three games in three days at the @EKUHoops Classic at McBrayer Arena over the weekend.


Hawkins’ best performance came in EKU’s 110-97 victory over Longwood on Sunday. The transfer from South Florida went for 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field. He also grabbed three rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked two shots. In Saturday’s win over South Carolina State, Hawkins scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and dropped five more assists. On Friday versus Ball State, he posted 20 points, four rebounds and two steals. Hawkins also scored 16 points and grabbed five boards in a loss to UNCW on Monday. For the week, Hawkins shot 67.5 percent (27-of-40) from the field, 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from deep and 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the stripe. Hawkins ranks second on the team in scoring this season at 20.0 points-per-game. Senior Jarelle Reischel is averaging 20.4 points-per-game for the high-octane Colonels. EKU currently ranks 17th in the country in scoring offense at 91.4 points-per-game. Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine was named the National Player of the Week, while Northern Iowa’s Wes Washpun was named the National High-Major Player of the Week. Hawkins and the Colonels return to action this Wednesday, November 23, versus Thomas More College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. A food drive will be held during Wednesday’s game. Fans receive free admission with the donation of a non-perishable food item.
