Kentucky Senior Guard Makenzie Cann Named to SEC Community Service Team

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky senior guard Makenzie Cann (pictured) has been named to the Southeastern Conference’s Community Service Team for her hard work in the Lexington community since arriving on campus.

This marks the 20th year for the SEC Community Service Team for women’s basketball as well as for men’s basketball. All league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men’s and women’s sports being chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994. Senior Alyssa Rice was named to the team last season.

Cann has a love for animals and has volunteered over 150 hours at the Lexington Humane Society working closely with the marketing and fundraising team. On multiple occasions, Cann has spent time building houses and a local park with Habitat for Humanity. A service project close to Cann’s heart is her work at Commonwealth City Church, where she brings her two dogs to play and interact with kids in the afterschool program. The native of Lawrenceburg, Ky., has also volunteered at the UK Children’s Hospital, Breakfast with Santa program and God’s Pantry Food Bank. Earlier this season, Cann and her teammates volunteered at several local elementary schools afterschool programs and spent an afternoon at the local YMCA playing basketball with kids.

On the court, Cann has played and started in all 28 games for UK this season, averaging 6.5 points per game while sitting second on the team with 40 made 3s. Cann is a two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and is majoring in integrated strategic communication with a minor in psychology.
