SHANE SHACKLEFORD: Some Random Thoughts on Kyrie Irving, Rick Pitino, John Wall, UK and High School

By Shane Shackleford

Hello sports fans. This is Shane coming to you from an undisclosed location in Speedwell, Tenn. Okay, I’m at my house just enjoying the evening after an unbelievable dinner by my fabulous wife Elizabeth. So, let’s talk a little sports, shall we?

  • Reports out of Cleveland are that All-Star guard Kyrie Irving is tired of playing second banana to Lebron James and wants out of Cavs land to be the man somewhere else. His list includes the Knicks, Spurs, Heat, and Timberwolves with the Spurs being his favorite landing place. But here’s the thing; would he be the man over forward Kawhi Leonard, who just happens to be arguably the best two-way forward in the game? I don’t know if that’s the place for him to achieve his goal. He would be better off doing that in New York or Miami.

  • Ole Miss fired head coach Hugh Freeze over calls to escort services, which begs the question; how in the world did Louisville keep Rick Pitino as head coach? Hmmm…

  • Wizards (and former UK) guard John Wall just signed a four-year, $170 million extension with the team. Not only well deserved but I’m glad he showed loyalty to Washington. Nice. And I wish they’d go back to being the Bullets instead of the Wizards. But that’s a different story.

  • I have been watching the Top 25 college football games of 2016 this week. I’m so ready for the season to start. I’m really excited about Kentucky football as well. I’ll have my predictions for the season soon, but here’s a hint; they’re going to be bold!

  • Speaking of football, I’m going to take some high school games in this year. My main goal is to travel down around Knoxville and take in the Alcoa/Maryville show. It looks amazing on TV, has to be even better live. I’ll also definitely be at the Middlesboro/Bell County war the first week of the season.

  • With all of the trouble he has faced over the years, how has Bengals DB Adam “PacMan” Jones kept a job in the NFL? And the truth is he is mediocre at best now. Any ideas?

  • I’ve also been watching the dunk contest replays. But I didn’t get to see the old school contests with Jordan, Wilkins, Drexler…those were some fun times. I remember when…okay, I’ll quit being an old man and hush.

Have a great week! Blessings to you!
